2018 Scientific Achievement Award for the MSG-136 on Modelling and Simulation as a Service: Rapid deployment of interoperable and credible simulation environments
The 2018 Scientific Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Robert Siegfried and the MSG-136 Research Task Group for their outstanding contribution to the S&T Organization Cooperative Programme of Work (CPoW).
The NATO Science & Technology Organization held its Fall 2018 (STB) Board Meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, GBR from 17th to 21st September 2018.
The Fall 2018 STB Dinner and Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday 19th September at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Dr. Robert Siegfried received from Dr. Thomas Killion, NATO Chief Scientist, as Chairman of the NATO Research Task Group MSG-136 on ‘Modelling and Simulation as a Service: Rapid deployment of interoperable and credible simulation environments’ a 2018 Scientific Achievement Award.
The NATO MSG-136 investigated the new concept of Modeling & Simulation as a Service (MSaaS) with the aim of providing the technical and organizational foundations for a future permanent service-based “Allied Framework for MSaaS” within NATO and Partner Nations. Their groundbreaking work resulted in the definition of MSaaS in the NATO context and the development of operational, technical and governance concepts for permanently establishing the “Allied Framework for MSaaS”. In addition to developing the foundational concepts, MSG-136 conducted extensive experimentation activities to test and validate the concepts.
The Task Group was Co-Chaired by Dr. Robert Siegfried (DEU) and Mr. Tom van den Berg (NLD) with the participation of experts from CAN, CZE, DNK, FRA, DEU, ITA, NLD, NOR, SVN, ESP, TUR, GBR, USA and NATO ACT.
A follow-on activity MSG-164 TG Modelling and Simulation as a Service - Phase 2 is already underway to transform MSaaS from a lab environment into an operationally relevant environment and to conduct necessary research and development efforts. This activity contributes to achieving the MSaaS vision that “M&S products, data and processes are conveniently accessible and available on-demand to all users in order to enhance operational effectiveness”.
