NATO STO's System Analysis and Studies Panel held semi-annual meetings in Ottawa

From 9 to 11 October, the NATO STO's System Analysis and Studies (SAS) Panel held its 44th meeting in Ottawa, Canada. The meeting, hosted by Defence Research and Development Canada, brought together Senior Researchers and Analysts from various NATO Nations, Partner Nations and NATO Organizations. At its Fall 2019 meeting, the panel received an update on NATO and STO level activities, reviewed 4 mid-term and 7 completed research projects, and decided on 16 new multi-national research activities.  

After the SAS Panel Chairperson, Dr Ana Barros, Principal Scientist at Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research, had opened the meeting, the national representatives were welcomed by Ms Eugenia Kalantzis, Director General Military Personnel Research & Analysis at Canadian Department of National Defence. Ms Kalantzis provided more insight on Canada’s Defence and Security Policy, and highlighted the importance of multi-national cooperation through institutions like the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO). 

Ms Clara Peters (NLD) was bestowed with the SAS Early Career Analyst Award in recognition and appreciation of her outstanding contributions to several NATO STO Research Task Groups through her expertise in the Concept Development Assessment Game (CDAG) and her excellent analytical capabilities. The award was presented by the Chairperson at the NATO Operations Research and Analysis Conference which was organized at the same location on the two days prior to the SAS Panel Business Meeting.

The SAS Panel - NATO STO’s expert analytical advice panel - develops and oversees studies, analysis and information exchange activities that explore how operational capability can best be provided and enhanced through the exploitation of new technologies, new forms of organization or new concepts of operation. It comprises of 43 senior scientific representatives from 23 NATO Nations, 2 Partnerships for Peace Nations, 1 Global Partner and 3 NATO organizations: NATO Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation, NATO Office of the Chief Scientist and NATO Communications and Information Agency.
