The Future of Warfare & the Role of New and Emerging Technologies

STO/CSO at the NATO 2030 Private Sector Dialogues on The Future of Warfare & the Role of New and Emerging Technologies, 25 November 2020, virtually

The NATO 2030: NATO-Private Sector Dialogues has been launched as a response to the request by NATO leaders to NATO’s Secretary-General to lead a forward-looking reflection on NATO’s future, NATO 2030.  This initiative includes a series of six NATO 2030 dialogues that aim at exploring how the private sector can contribute to addressing the most pressing technology-based security risks and contribute to increasing societal resilience across the Alliance. These dialogues will further look to deepen the involvement of the private sector across the transatlantic sphere and galvanize their activity in advancing NATO’s collective security agenda.

Last week, the STO Collaboration Support Office participated in the first out of six dialogues of the NATO 2030 Private Sector Dialogues on “The Future of Warfare & the Role of New and Emerging Technologies”, facilitated by GLOBSEC.

With several high-level roundtable, it is worth highlighting the roundtable discussion on “The Private Sector, Big and Small”, in which Camille Grand, NATO Assistant Secretary General (ASG) for Defence Investment, stressed how NATO is closely engaged with Academia through the NATO Science and Technology Organization, with its network of over 6,000 scientists and researchers. The ASG further emphasized the success of the STO over the years, and its accomplishments, bringing together multiple stakeholders in support of NATO capability development and innovation.

Finally, Dr. Ana Barros, former System Analysis and Studies (SAS) Panel Chair and current SAS Panel member for The Netherlands, hosted a showcase presentation on AI and Big Data. Dr. Barros highlighted the added value of the STO and its collaborative business model, further expanding upon the outcomes of the Specialist Team on AI and Big Data for Military Decision Making (IST-173), which brought together a multi-domain team of academia, military and private sector to develop a living S&T roadmap. This roadmap provides an overview of the current STO Collaborative Programme of Work (CPoW) in the AIBD area, and identifies key areas where new research is needed, capturing the current state in a Wiki manner as it is open for consultation and modification. The Wiki can be found on Science Connect.  A recording of the discussions can be found on YouTube.
