First Disruptive Technologies Table-Top Exercise (D3TX)

NATO’s Science and Technology Organization (STO) held the first Disruptive Technologies Table-Top Exercise (D3TX) and the 2021 Plans and Programmes Workshop (PPW)

On February 8th the NATO Chief Scientist, Dr Bryan Wells, opened the two-day Disruptive Table-Top Exercise (D3TX), the first such event held at the level of the STO. The event, based on the Disruptive Technology Assessment Game (DTAG) previously developed by the STO and adjusted for conduct in a virtual setting, brought together scientists and engineers from across NATO’s scientific network alongside a significant group of military users.

This exercise investigated and assessed the potential military applications of Emerging and Disruptive Technologies (EDTs) in several scenarios reflecting the range of roles that NATO might undertake. In particular, the exercise considered:

  • How EDTs or their combinations can be best applied in the military field for NATO advantage;
  • What other new technologies (weak signals) offer the potential for military advantage in the future;
  • How the application of EDTs by other agents could be countered;
  • What the state of the development in these areas is.

Following the fruitful completion of the exercise, the two-day 2021 STO Plans and Programmes Workshop (PPW) took place on February 10th- 11th which gave the STO network of scientists and engineers the opportunity to undertake a first analysis of the outcomes. This analysis will be continued over the coming weeks, and will be presented to the STB in March, with further work at the Business Meetings in Q2 of 2021.
