The NATO Chief Scientist briefed at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

The NATO Chief Scientist Dr Bryan Wells briefed at the Collective Scientific National Academy of the United States: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

The National Academies’ Intelligence Community Studies Board (NASEM) organized the workshop: “Leveraging the Future Research and Development Ecosystem for the Intelligence Community” having as theme the US collaboration with Allies.

Dr Wells, illustrated the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) which is the world’s largest defense Science and Technology (S&T) collaborative network. It involves 30 Allies, many partner Countries, engages Government, Industry and Academics and has a network of more than 6000 researchers developing more than 300 projects having a value of 300 Million euros.
The STO’s main mission is to generate and exploit a leading edge S&T programme of work, in order to deliver timely results and advice that advance the defence capabilities of NATO and to sustain NATO technological advantage. STO accomplices its mission through its network and the commitment of its three executive bodies the Collaboration Support Office (CSO), the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) and the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE).
During the workshop, Dr Wells introduced one of the STO’s publications: ”The Science & Technology Trends: 2020-2040 “ report that provides an assessment of emerging or disruptive technologies and their potential impact on NATO military operations, defence capabilities, and political decision space.
As Dr Wells highlighted, the report demonstrates that the new technologies should be cheap, easy-to-use, dominated by the civil sector and spread over a large range of technical areas.

Dr Wells is also member of the NATO Innovation Board and illustrated how the Board coordinates policy and cooperation on innovation across the NATO enterprise, overseeing innovation and emerging disruptive technologies strategy implementation to keep NATO at the forefront of innovation.
