The NATO Chief Scientist, Dr Wells at the 2021 Summer School for Young Diplomats

The annual “Gavro Vuković” Summer School for Young Diplomats  took place this week 5- 9 July 2021.
The Summer School is organized by the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, and co-sponsored by NATO, and this year as its discussion theme: “Reinforce trust and cooperation to shape secure and prosperous future”.
This edition took place online and offered a wide programme: panel discussions, workshops, social events and presentations. It brought together young diplomats from Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Australia, who had the chance to listen to prominent academics, diplomats and politicians.

 

The Summer School saw the participation of many NATO speakers & experts joining forces to inspire the new generation of young diplomats and discussing complex issues of contemporary international affairs.
This year, the NATO Chief Scientist Dr Bryan Wells briefed at the summer school on “Science Diplomacy” how Science enables cooperation to mutually support nations and to maintain NATO’s technological advantage.
Dr Wells highlighted that Science provides an excellent means to build relations between nations and international organizations. NATO plays its role in Science through the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) and the NATO Science for Peace and Security programme (SPS). STO and SPS work very closely together.

NATO STO brings together a network of more than 6,000 scientists, engages academia, government, industry and keeps NATO at the forefront of technology. NATO STO has a laboratory in La Spezia, Italy: the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) that has a rich programme of work and is currently is conducting research in the High North to monitor climate change.
NATO SPS promoting dialog, scientific and practical cooperation, and develops international cooperation between NATO, its Allies and Partners. It offers funding, expert advice and support to tailor-made, civil security-relevant activities that respond to NATO’s strategic objectives.
