Background

Objectives

The aim is to establish a NATO consensus concerning the threat to soldier performance from high levels of ‘cognitive demand’ and to identify strategies to mitigate the threats in order to maintain operational effectiveness.

Topics

Scope to include: • Agreeing on a definition of cognitive load • Identifying tool and methods to assess cognitive load, and its relation to cognitive performance • Identifying tools and methods to measure situation awareness • Investigating the interaction between cognitive and physical performance and/or workload • Provide technical guidance on system design to optimise cognitive performance. This could include information presentation guidance and information presentation across the soldier system (e.g. HUDs, PDAs, weapon sights, audio, haptic etc.)
