NATO Chief Scientist spoke at the seminar “NATO2030: Strengthening the Alliance to Address New Security Threats”

In view of the upcoming NATO summit on June 14th, The World Affairs Councils of America organized the "NATO2030: Strengthening the Alliance to Address New Security Threats" Speaker Series in partnership with NATO and 6 World Affairs Councils hosting high-level NATO officials and ambassadors from Allied countries.
In this framework, the NATO Chief Scientist, Dr Bryan Wells and Ambassador David Angell, Permanent Representative of Canada to NATO ,engaged Global Minnesota’s regional audience and the nationwide Council network speaking at “NATO’s Climate challenge – Climate Security and Green Defense” seminar.


Dr Bryan Wells spoke about the challenges of creating equitable climate and security policies and provided a wide overview about NATO’s commitment in addressing new security threats.

The world is changing and as the NATO 2030 initiatives shows, NATO is continuing to adapt to keep Allies safe in this decade and beyond and remains ready today to face tomorrow’s challenges.
Dr Wells explained his job as advisor to NATO leadership on matters of science and how they affect defence and security within the nations. He illustrated the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO), its network of 6000 scientists and their efforts in maintaining NATO’s technological edge with more than 300 research projects underway.
The NATO Chief Scientist mentioned that he had recently briefed the nations on the science that underpins the verification of nuclear disarmament, and he has published a research report on the topic of women in the Armed Forces, it is the first of a series, currently he is advising leadership in the context of the summit focusing on climate change and new technologies.

The NATO STO is contributing to addressing the challenge of Climate Change particularly through its Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) that provide analyses of climate scenarios. Using its ice-capable research vessel Alliance that is traveling into the arctic, CMRE is studying and analyzing arctic environment in order to improve the understanding of the Allies on climate change and how it affects the maritime environment.

During his speech, Dr Wells also recalled NATO efforts in addressing COVID-19 challenge. NATO transported vital medical equipment by air, the scientists made available their knowledge in support of their own nations for the benefit of everyone, also in countering disinformation.
