NATO STO CMRE and NOAA join forces to understand and address climate change

La Spezia, November 2, 2021 -- Today U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) Deputy Director Rear Adm. Nancy Hann and the NATO Science and Technology Organization Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) Director Dr. Catherine Warner signed a renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at providing a binding framework to support the long-standing working relationship between CMRE and NOAA.

“Both NOAA and CMRE are actively committed to improving understanding and forecasting in climate-critical areas, such as the north and northeastern Atlantic Ocean,” said Rear Adm. Hann.

“This partnership will allow the sharing of assets and expertise to better accomplish common research programmes in detecting and monitoring long-term climate change,” said Dr. Warner. “The CMRE’s Arctic-capable NATO Research Vessel (NRV) Alliance will provide a quiet, state-of-the-art global platform for U.S. scientists to conduct research and collect vital ocean and atmospheric observations, with the support of the CMRE’s scientific and ocean engineering capabilities.”

The previous MOU between the two organizations was signed in 2015.
