The NATO Chief Scientist Research Reports (CSRRs)

NATO’ Science and Technology Organization (STO) recently concluded major studies on targeted EDTs and NATO Special Operation Forces (SOFs).

Continuing in its endeavour to advise NATO Senior Leadership on significant S&T issues and their impact on security and defence, the NATO Chief Scientist Dr Wells commissioned in 2020 a series of evidence-based reports called Chief Scientist Research Reports (CSRRs). Those reports compile the extensive scientific knowledge of STO’s Programme of Works (PoWs), ensuring S&T vanguard while sustaining NATO, Allies and Partners technological edge.

In 2022, the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) has issued three reports that draw upon STO’s insightful accomplishments, providing advice or policy insights on Autonomous Technologies, Advancing the NATO Special Operation Forces (SOFs) Lifecycle and Artificial Intelligence.

The Autonomous Technologies paper interrogates the last decade of STO research on autonomy in order to increase awareness while assessing the integration of increasingly mature autonomous technologies. With similar objectives, the Artificial Intelligence Review compiles STO PoWs’ achievement from 2011 to 2021. The investigation contributes to the evolution and integration of increasingly Intelligent, Interconnected, Distributed and Digital (I2D2) strategic thinking and warfighting capabilities. Finally, the Advancing the NATO Special Operation Forces (SOFs) Lifecycle addresses relevant human factors issues for the future of SOFs between 2012 and 2022. The analysis considers the whole operator lifecycle comprising issues on both physical, mental and emotional spheres.

The NATO CSRRs, S&T Advice documents and more relevant activity findings can be found from the NATO Chief Scientist's Reports page.
