 The NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) this week released its 2022 Highlights publication, providing an overview of the key scientific research and initiatives carried out over the past year. The annual report was unveiled on 21 March at the spring meeting of the NATO Science and Technology Board (STB) at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
The 2022 Highlights publication showcases activities carried out by the three STO executive bodies – the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS), the Collaboration Support Office (CSO) and the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) – as well as the technical committees (Panels and Group). The Organization carried out more than 300 activities in 2022, spanning the range of physical, information and human sciences and applications over all five of NATO’s operational domains.
“2022 was a year marked by major geopolitical events, from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the invitation to Finland and Sweden to join the NATO Alliance,” said Dr Bryan Wells, NATO Chief Scientist. “Against this backdrop, the 2022 Highlights publication shows how the STO Programmes of Work, and the Organization as a whole, continues to deliver the necessary solutions to face the security challenges of today and tomorrow.”
This year’s report focuses on STO work in three areas: its proactive work to help advance NATO’s forward agenda; its responsiveness to changing circumstances; and its efforts to build resilience into its workforce. The publication also features unique insights from Finland and Sweden on their respective engagements with the STO, and their broader approaches to science and technology.
