STONewsArchive: IST Brainstorming Session on Edge / Cloud Computing at the Tactical Edge

Title: IST Brainstorming Session on Edge / Cloud Computing at the Tactical Edge
Start_Publishing: 05/02/2021
Panel_Page: IST
Page_ID: 3786
Main_Body_Multi: Vast amounts of data are exchanged and processed daily over the Internet/Cloud. As the civilian sector is reaping immense benefits from this paradigm, the military must continue to exploit the opportunities it presents and investigate its challenges. More than ever this capability needs to be brought to the tactical edge to support commanders who face increasingly complex scenarios. Of particular interest are advances in mobile technology and cloud computing which offer real opportunities to bridge the strategic to tactical levels to the soldier. Several challenges exist as we consider the divide between mobile capability and cloud capabilities along the compute, memory, storage and latency axes, as well as the challenges of novel architectural concepts.

Thus, understanding the value of this technology, and in an attempt to engage the IST community in a topical discussion, while the pandemic persists and keeps us from meeting physically, a first IST brainstorming session on Edge / Cloud Computing at the Tactical Edge took place last week, via WebEx.

Kicking-off with introductory remarks from Mr. Manas Pradhan (FKIE), Mr. Pieter Elands (TNO) and Mr. Arjen Holtzer (TNO), the almost 50 people who joined followed with open discussions. This brainstorming session, not only allowed for the exchange of ideas on Edge / Cloud Computing, but also for the different participants, representing different Nations, to seek convergence in their National priorities in the area, while creating potential synergies in their efforts. Ultimately, this session aimed at gathering experts in the topic under discussion to allow for knowledge sharing, which will lead the Nations to collaborate in the topic of discussion within the framework of the STO.
