STONewsArchive: NATO Core Services Profiling for Hybrid Tactical Networks

Title: NATO Core Services Profiling for Hybrid Tactical Networks

Main_Body_Multi: NATO currently puts an emphasis on the Federated Mission Networking (FMN) concept, which aims to achieve interoperability between nations. The NATO Core Services form a basic building block on which this interoperability is based. However, a solution for deploying Core Services on the tactical level of FMN is still lacking. The IST-150 Research Task Group on “NATO Core Services Profiling for Hybrid Tactical Networks” has been established to, precisely, address the challenge of implementing Core Services in hybrid tactical networks by providing guidance and best practices in the form of a set of tactical profiles. With the aim of conducting identification and feasibility assessments of possible improvements of the Core Services over a series of live and emulated experiments, this Research Task Group has targeted Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) in the tactical domain, and specifically the Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM) Core Service. The group’s technical report, entitled “NATO Core Services profiling for Hybrid Tactical Networks”, provides knowledge about services at the tactical level. Their report summarises their work on MOM, which covers two main communication paradigms (Publish/subscribe communication and request/response communication), and presents specific recommendations on using industry standard Message Queueing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) for publish/subscribe and using REST-based services for request/response type services. Their work should be taken both as an input to future FMN spirals as well as continuing IST research task groups where MOM services play a role.

The pre-released report is available on this website. For further information, please contact the IST Panel Office.
