IST-ET-118 on Complementary use of symbolic and sub-symbolic AI
The two approaches of AI (Artificial Intelligence), symbolic and sub-symbolic, being mostly explored separately, IST-ET-118 aims to identify possible ways in which symbolic and sub-symbolic solutions may interact technically. It intends to improve the accuracy of systems and enhance military decision-making, and to analyze possible implications on how ontologies should be developed and maintained in the military domain. This Exploratory Team will conduct a survey of literature dealing with the combined use of symbolic and sub-symbolic approaches, list potential use cases with military relevance, estimate the expected gains when combining the different AI approaches.
