Causal reasoning can be considered an emerging topic in Artificial Intelligence/Machine learning. To assess causal models and utility for enhancing situational awareness and “information advantage” to NATO and coalition nations, IST-ET-119 will create an overview on concepts of computational causal reasoning as well as causal discovery and respective proofs of concept; investigate the relation of causal models to other kinds of models; create an overview on existing tools for causal discovery and reasoning; identify and describe exemplary military use cases in various domains; assess the value of applying causal reasoning support in the military domain; consider causal system development and implementation issues and relation to other system level architecture developments; and generally outline the STEM base needed to advance capability in this emerging area in coalition nations.
