Main_Body_Multi: Last week the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG) conducted its Fall Business Meeting (BM) at the Naval Barracks in Amsterdam, NLD. The event was opened by the host nation welcome from BGEN Ludy SCHMIDT, Director of Plans, Directorate of Plans - Defense Staff and followed by the address of John-Mikal STORDAL, Director of the Collaboration Support Office of the NATO Science and Technology Organization.


Held in a hybrid format for the first time, the NMSG BM brought together 42 members of the NMSG attending in-person plus over 20 joining remotely. There were 19 NATO and Partner Nations, 6 NATO bodies and 1 non-NATO organization represented at the BM. During the BM, the NMSG conducted subgroups and plenary sessions which, among other topics, included a revision of current Programme of Work, proposals for its development and invited presentations. 


Composed of the NMSG subgroups and the Plenary Session, the BM drew upon current activities, the revision and decision of the future Programme of Work, the latest technical developments in Modelling and Simulation aspects of military decision support tools, training & education, and standardization. Among the decisions taken throughout the meeting, the NMSG also re-elected the Chair, Dr Robert SIEGFRIED (DEU) for one additional year until Spring 2023 and elected Mr Bharat PATEL (GBR) as Vice-Chair, who will initiate his mandate at the end of the NMSG 2022 Spring BM.


In recognition of his exemplary service as the Modelling and Simulation Coordination Office Technical Officer since 2005 and Acting Executive Officer, LTC (ret.) Adrian VOICULET was presented the NMSG Excellence Award 2021 highlighting his immeasurable contribution to the success of the NMSG while supporting NATO, NATO and Partner Nations, NATO Bodies and organizations as well as the NMSG and NMSG Leadership. The NMSG Excellence Award is presented annually for an excellent contribution to an STO Collaborative Network activity.


The BM included a technical visit to the Royal Netherlands Navy simulation facilities at naval base Den Helder.


The final two days of the week were dedicated to the Annual NMSG Symposium also held in a hybrid format for the first time. This years’ theme was “Towards Training and Decision Support for Complex Multi-Domain Operations” bringing together more than 70 in-person attendees and about 20 remote participants. The Keynote addresses by Mr Auke VENEMA, Strategic Advisor NLD MoD, NLD STB Member and COL Mietta GROENEVELD, Director NATO Command and Control Centre of Excellence (NATO C2COE) were followed by the NMSG Young Scientist Award presentation given by Mr Paolo DE HEER , 16 paper and 5 poster presentations.


The Young Scientist Award 2021 was attributed to Mr Paolo DE HEER for his paper on “Multi-agent reinforcement learning using simulated quantum annealing” (presented at the International Conference on Computational Science, ICCS).


The Symposium pre-released papers can be found on the STO Website. The presentations and the Symposium Technical Evaluation Report will follow on the same website page.


The next NMSG Business Meeting will take place in May 2022, in Rome, ITA, and the next Annual Symposium in Bath, GBR in October 2022.
