Main_Body_Multi: Sensors and Electronics Technology (SET) 48th Panel Business Meeting, 25-29 October 2021, Marseille (FRA)

The SET Panel successfully concluded its 2021 Fall Panel Business Meeting (PBM) at Palais du Pharo in Marseille (FRA). Held in a hybrid format after 3 virtual PBMs in a row, it brought together 50 members of the SET Panel physically (plus 18 joining online) from 24 Nations and the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE). During the meeting, it was possible to observe that the participants appreciated meeting again in person to build and reestablish relationships within the SET network. During the week, the three Focus Groups – Multi Sensors and Electronics (MSE); Radio-Frequency Technology (RFT); and Optical Technology (OT) - drew upon current activities, the revision and decision of the future Programme of Work, the most recent technical developments and the latest emerging technologies. The Panel also heard seven initial briefings from recently started activities and two final presentations by the Chairmen of the SET-245 RTG on “Radar Based Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) in the Low Airspace and Complex Surface Environments” and the SET-250 RTG on “Multi-Dimensional Radar Imaging”. At the end of the PBM, the SET Panel endorsed five new activities (three Task Groups, one Workshop and one Symposium) and approved three Exploratory Teams.

In conjunction with the PBM, the SET Panel held the SET-273 Research Specialists’ Meeting (RSM) on Multidimensional Radar Imaging and ATR on 25-26 October. The RSM brought together over 70 experts of radar imaging and Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR). During the event, 23 authors from eight Nations presented their papers showcasing the latest research results in this field and opened the ground for discussions about the impact of such results on NATO operations and inspired the way ahead. At the end of the RSM, Mr. Daniel GUSLAND and Dr. Øyvind Lund AARDAL from FFI (NOR) received the Best Paper Award for their paper: “Open Radar Initiative: Common radar platform and large scale radar dataset”.

We would like to thank our French local coordinators, led by Col. Etienne LERAY, for their hospitality and the support given before and throughout our stay in Marseille. For further information, please contact the SET Panel Office.
