Main_Body_Multi: The NATO STO Research Task Group on ‘Analysis of Anti-Access Area Denial’ (reference SAS-147) will organize a wargame on 13-16 June 2022 at NATO Joint Warfare Center, in Stavanger, Norway. The intention is to engage a mix of staff with experience of Joint Operations Planning in the 2 (Intel), 3 (Ops), and 5 (Planning) roles, but as the purpose of the activity is to explore innovative ways of tackling an A2/AD situation, we encourage participation of knowledgeable personnel with a view to new technology and thinking ”out-of-the-box”.

The SAS-147 team explores and assesses challenges posed by modern A2/AD capabilities and aims to identify potential solutions. The team has identified a “smorgasbord” of potential solutions, focusing mainly on technological and tactical means, but also considering innovative solutions in the operational and strategic spaces. Participants in the wargame will challenge, test and refine these solutions during the event. The week will consist of a series of classified scenario-based discussions centered on the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic/Arctic region. The analysis of the outcome of the event will serve as an important input for recommendations to NATO on informed capability development, as well as national capability development, through the team’s Technical Report. Publication of this report is foreseen for early 2023.

Participation for this event will be by invitation only. For more information or when interested in joining the research effort, please contact the SAS Panel Office.

This research is overseen by NATO STO’s System Analysis and Studies (SAS) Panel. This Panel is NATO STO’s expert panel for analytical advice that develops and oversees studies, analysis and information exchange activities that explore how operational capability can best be provided and enhanced through the exploitation of new technologies, new forms of organization or new concepts of operation. It is comprised of around 50 senior scientific representatives from 23 NATO Nations, 3 Partnership for Peace Nations, 1 Global Partner and 3 NATO organizations.
