Main_Body_Multi: The NATO STO held a Research Specialists’ Meeting for “Women in Sensors and Electronics Technology” this month, marking an important step toward building a more vibrant community of women expertise within the STO collaborative network. The event, organized by the STO Sensors and Electronics Technology (SET) Panel, was held on 13-14 June at the Hôtel de Talleyrand in Paris, France.

Chaired by Dr Laura Anitori (NLD) and Dr Elisa Giusti (ITA), the meeting brought together a diverse group of 33 experts from 11 NATO Nations and partner nations to share their knowledge and expertise on a wide range of topics, including sensor technology, radar, artificial intelligence and machine learning, quantum, and data fusion. Keynote addresses were delivered by Mr John-Mikal Størdal, Director of the STO Collaboration Support Office (CSO), Col Laura Regan, Head of the Operations and Coordination Office at the CSO, and Ms Marie-Thérèse Velluet (FRA), who was an SET Panel Member from 2015-2022 and served as the Optical Focus Group Co-ordinator from 2018-2022.

The initiative (SET-327) was launched as part of an effort to promote greater diversity in the SET Panel, as well as in the STO and NATO more broadly. The STO Collaborative Programme of Work (CPoW) is underpinned by a network of more than 5,000 scientists and engineers from across the Alliance, comprising the world’s largest collaborative network for defence science and technology. Expanding this network to include a more diverse range of experts is key to ensuring that the CPoW will continue to meet Nations’ needs for cutting-edge science and technology.

“Diversifying our network of world-class scientists and engineers is a top priority for the STO, and key to the future of the Collaborative Programme of Work,” said Col Regan. “Building new networks and support mechanisms for under-represented groups is an important step in this process, and that is exactly what the ‘Women in SET’ activity aims to achieve.”

The activity’s Chairs plan to build on the momentum of this month’s event by developing a roadmap for short- and long-term goals and activities, and building a repository of subject matter experts to facilitate connections among women working across various SET disciplines.
