Background: In the effort of educating, training and attracting young researchers/scientists within military science and technology, NATO CSO is conducting a series of actions that should bring new researchers and scientists to join NATO STO activities. In particular, the SET Panel has been active in this matter by introducing a number of new features, such as establishing a prize for the “Best young scientist paper” and by dedicating specific sessions within NATO Specialist Meetings and Symposia.
With the aim of providing a solid education program for young scientists, the SET Panel is proposing a Summer School of the duration of one week where various aspects of Sensors and Electronics Technology will be taught at tutorial level by a selected pool of experts.
A summer school differs from RLS as it is not specifically focused on a single topic but it expands across different fields of SET and it is taught at a more tutorial level to let young scientists to be introduced to the field and especially from a more military stand point. This should attract young researchers from various fields and make them aware of the possibilities that are open to them when joining NATO SET activities.
This STO Summer School would have the SET as a theme, but the idea would be to replicate this effort every year by rotating across the various Panels and Groups so to extend the concept to other areas and foster the attraction of young scientists across all NATO STO research and technology areas.
The SET theme would include lectures on sensing with radar, acoustic, EO, IR and CBRN detection systems. It would move across, sensor signal and image processing, technology, and various military applications in all domain of interest, including land, sea, air and space. Moreover, data fusion as well as electronic components and emerging disruptive technologies would be also included in the suite of topics to be presented during the lectures.
The STO Summer School would have a RLS-like structure with a number of lecturers who would alternate 1-2 hour-long lectures both in the morning and in the afternoon over a period of five days (Mon-Fri). Practical sessions with real laboratory sensors and electronic systems may be also included to give the attendants a chance to see real systems and how real data is produced.
An introduction to NATO STO, CSO and the SET Panel would be provided at the beginning of the Summer School to introduce the participants to NATO STO and, more specifically, to the CSO and its collaborative platform. This presentation may be given by a young instructor in order to highlight the attractive aspects and to be effective towards younger generations.
Objectives: The objectives of this new activity are to promote STO awareness through Sensor and Electronic Technology themes in order to enhance participation of young international scientist and introduce them to the overall ideas and goals of NATO S&T. Through the summer camp, new scientist and engineers will engage with current SET members to champion innovative thought and bring in new perspectives in the field of sensing as it relates to NATO military applications and promotion of novel future S&T in the areas of radar, EO, IR, CBRN detection, and autonomous solutions.
