Activity title: Enhanced weapons performance through new energetic molecules/formulations/processing
Activity Reference: AVT-395
Panel: AVT
Security Classification: NATO UNCLASSIFIED
Status: Active
Activity type: RTG
Start date: 2024-01-01T00:00:00Z
Actual End date: 2026-12-31T00:00:00Z
Keywords: Energetics, Explosives, Molecules, Munitions, Processing, Propellants, Pyrotechnics, Synthesis
Background: NATO AVT had identified an urgent need to support and develop operational capability through intelligent and advanced use of novel and existing energetic materials, which will also assist in sustaining the access to technical staff through active participation and sharing in collaboration with allies. This is needed to ensure that NATO can match future requirements both cost effectively and intelligently. NATO-ET-197 was set up in 2019 to explore topics and developed an extensive crosswalk from all aspects of energetic materials research. AVT-340 was then established and conducted a most successful virtual workshop that addressed current and cutting-edge EM topics. The AVT advisory group decided it was of interest to request a follow-on ET in order to focus on one or two of those areas of most interest to member nations. NATO-ET-222 was established and has started developing topics. This RTG addresses the first topic identified for collaboration.
Objectives: The scientific objectives will be to identify and develop new promising energetic molecules for enhanced weapons performance. In addition, new processing methods and advanced formulations of those new molecules will be considered within the RTG when they clearly offer performance enhancements. The common thread will be to rapidly fill capability gaps within participating countries by getting access to new materials and methods that can make a difference in the performance of weapons.
Topics: The specific topics to be addressed are, in the order of priority:
• New energetic molecules that have promising performance in propellants, explosives and pyrotechnics and that have not received a lot of attention yet.
• Existing recent energetic molecules that have not been studied thoroughly and that can deliver an enhanced performance, maybe in an application that was not foreseen before.
• New formulations using recent and modern energetic materials, and that offer a performance enhancement because of their specific composition.
• New emerging processing methods that can make recent and modern energetics more performant because of the nature of the processing.
Since there may be other activities created in energetic materials, only the topics listed above will be considered in this RTG. The common threads are the novelty of molecules/formulations/methods and the enhanced performance.
