Background: IST-ET-124, Using an AI Maturity Model to Accelerate AI Adoption, was formally established in March of 2023. It was founded based on the collective need for collaboration across NATO nations for harnessing the development of AI technology and developing and applying an AI maturity framework to facilitate this process. Such a framework allows members to assess their current AI maturity, develop strategies, and allocate resources in a way that promotes responsible AI use, strategic planning, and interoperability among member nations. The past six months have witnessed considerable progress in collaborating with ET members on the benefits of a maturity model and in developing a deeper understanding of the value of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence AI Maturity Model (AI MM) for application within their respective organizations. This model and its corresponding assessment tool provide a systematic approach to achieve success as well as a valuable means to guide NATO members as they plan to adopt and implement a significant transformative technology. Both constructs allow for the development of a cohesive framework for understanding and prioritizing the trajectory of AI adoption practices across and between organizations and their mission programs, as well as for developing a corresponding strategic roadmap to guide and achieve greater adoption success.

This model is very closely aligned with the 2021 NATO AI Strategy and its principles of responsible use It also aligns with additional NATO efforts, including SAS-160, SAS-181, and IST-169.This alignment will contribute to improved AI technology capability application throughout NATO for enhanced defense cooperation, collaboration, and effective interoperability; these pursuits are the basis for the RTG on “Enabling AI Adoption for Enhanced Defense Interoperability.” This background will help the RTG to advise NATO on mission critical and enterprise AI adoption.
Objectives: This RTG is predicated on the 2021 NATO AI Strategy and its emphasis on defense interoperability. It will build upon the ET-124 achievements which include the socialization and application of the AI Maturity Model (MM) within NATO and broadening the collaborative environment comprising 10 nations and NATO bodies committed to advancing AI adoption. The RTG will advise NATO on mission critical and enterprise AI adoption.
