Activity title: End-2-End NG-NRMM Demonstration with Autonomous Assist Systems (CDT)
Activity Reference: AVT-410
Panel: AVT
Security Classification: NATO UNCLASSIFIED
Status: Active
Activity type: RTG
Start date: 2024-01-01T00:00:00Z
Actual End date: 2026-12-31T00:00:00Z
Keywords: Autonomous Assist, Ground Vehicles, Mobility, Modeling and Simulation, NGNRMM, Operational Planning, Terrain Mapping
Background: The recent development effort of Next-Generation NATO Reference Mobility Model (NG-NRMM) through RTG 248 and culminating with the publication of STANREC 4813 and supporting document AMSP-06 has led to a need for further information, understanding of the benefits, and how to adapt organizations to the use of NG-NRMM in member nations. Two Cooperative Demonstrations of Technologies (CDTs) have been performed as part of the follow-on RTG 308. Firstly, during the Fall of 2018 in Houghton, Michigan (USA) with a focus on Modeling & Simulation, Verification & Validation and Uncertainty Quantification at the proving grounds at Keweenaw Research Center. Secondly, during the Spring of 2022 in Trier (GER) at the German Army’s WTD41 proving ground with a focus on the operational use of the generated mobility maps following the NG-NRMM framework. While the goal of the NG-NRMM framework is clear in fostering a common framework for communication of mobility in acquisition, design, and operational use, the work and resources needed when implementing the framework in NATO nations are less clear. No training, support tool, or clear guidance of resources needed for NG-NRMM compliance is currently available. This CDT is aimed at educating Member Nations and their relevant personnel involved in ground vehicle system acquisition, military planning, and training of soldiers in adopting NG-NRMM. The core purpose is to gain access to the enhanced mobility of ground systems in actual terrain that NG-NRMM offers.
Objectives: In the CDT, experts from the government, military, industry, and academia will layout an end-2-end plan for the needs of a NG-NRMM based capability in a NATO nation through the following objectives:
- Capture current state of mobility planning and assist tools and resources necessary for gathering intelligence of area of operation
- Training of planners and soldiers in the use of mobility effects to the benefit of the operational effectiveness
- Identify sources of GIS based terrain data, gathering if additional information, and in-situ testing
- Identify vehicles of interest and the operational mission
- Preparing databases for GIS based mobility prediction
- Further research and application of remote sensing for soil bearing capacity measurements including weather effects.
- Identify research activities for vehicle as a sensor for soil ground truth measurements to enhance mobility maps by units operating in the field
- Identify an autonomous assist operation for the operational area of operation
Topics: The relevant scientific topics addressed in this CDT are located in the following research domains:
- GIS based terrain including slopes, land use, moisture, soil type and strength layering.
- Remote sensing
- Vehicle performance prediction model resolution
- Efficient generation of directional mobility maps
- Vehicle as a sensor for feedback of soil strength
- Autonomous assist development for demonstration at area of operation
- Effective training methodology for nations adopting NG-NRMM
