Background: Women in SET (WiS) is an initiative launched within the SET PBM in Fall 2021, with the objective to strengthen and enlarge the global network of SET panel female members and to promote women engineers and STEM scientists in the SET panel and further in NATO.
The idea to create a dedicated working group, named WiS, was a response from the SET panel to a call from NATO CSO to initiate activities to promote diversity within NATO to become a more inclusive organization. One of the objectives of WiS is to increase the involvement of women in both technical activities and leadership roles within SET, and in NATO S&T at large, as well as to create a trusted network where women can seek for mentoring and support.
The WiS so far has organized the “WiS lunch” that takes place at every SET PBMs, a Webex virtual workshop held on September 2022, to which all women working in SET activities were invited, and a specialists’ meeting, SET-327/RSM, in June 2023. The RSM was a great success, with 36 attendees from 12 Members States, during which, in addition to the technical presentations, a half day was dedicated to a panel discussion to identify future activities to increase the footprint and impact of WiS and further extend the initiative within CSO and NATO S&T.
Some proposal for future initiatives identified during the SM included (and are further described in a separated report):
• Creation of a Roadmap for WiS to identify future steps, goals and approach;
• Creation of a Mentors-Mentees network to support women career development;
• Organization of webinars to inform junior WiS about NATO STO and SET panel, and possible activities ( RTGs, ETs, SMs, etc..);
• Continuation of WiS working meetings and technical workshops (physical as well as virtual) at different locations (to increase visibility of WiS across all Member States and facilitate participation);
• Creation of a WiS database (to invite female experts for e.g. technical briefings, talks, chair and MALs’s roles, etc..);
• Creation of geographical groups to organize local meetings and initiatives.
The success of the SET specialists’ meeting resonated not only within the SET panel, but further in the NATO S&T community. Therefore, the proposal is to create a cross-panel task group to further extend the SET WiS to include members from other panels to implement together future initiatives to achieve the desired goals.
Objectives: The goal of the working group is to 1) create a pool of specialist women involved in NATO S&T, 2) implement the activities that resulted from the WiS RSM to improve gender balance within NATO S&T, 3) to further promote women career development in their respective expertise areas.
Topics: The RTG will cover all technical activities in which female engineers and scientists are involved in NATO S&T, such as sensor technology, System Integration, Survivability.
