Computational Uncertainty in Military Vehicle Design

RTO-MP-AVT-147

The complexity of modern military systems, as well as the cost and difficulty associated with experimentally verifying system and subsystem design makes the use of high-fidelity based simulation a desirable alternative for design and development. The predictive ability of such simulations has matured significantly. However, for them to be used with confidence in design and development, quantitative measures of uncertainty must be available. The AVT 147 Symposium, organized in 3 plenary sessions and 10 thematically focussed sessions, was designed to evaluate current methods of assessing simulation uncertainty, to identify future research and development needs associated with these methods, and to present examples of how these needs are being addressed and how the methods are being applied. There were 56 papers presented addressing essentially all of the areas of concern for quantifying uncertainty and our confidence in that uncertainty. While the research and case studies presented were impressive in their quality and breadth, much remains to be done. Furthermore, it is clear that great progress could be made if workers would use the tools presently available. In fact, one plenary speaker described the lack of credible uncertainty quantification as the Achilles’ Heel of complex computational simulation.
