Sea Dumped Munitions and Environmental Risk

STO-MP-AVT-269

The AVT-269 Research Workshop on “Sea Dumped Munitions and Environmental Risk” was attended by approximately 2 dozen scientists and engineers from 14 nations. In addition to these two dozen scientists and engineers who attended the complete session, there were 6 – 8 students and two instructors from the Bulgarian Naval Academy who were present. Twelve technical papers were presented with one expected paper withdrawn. The presentations of the various papers lead to 30 questions being asked and answered. A summation of the 30 questions asked of the presenters and the answers they provided is included. It was recommended that NATO STO AVT continue to sponsor efforts (technical specialists’ meetings, research workshops, exploratory teams, cooperative demonstrations of specialized monitoring or inspection systems, tests, assessments, and protocols) as needed to advance the science, knowledge, and understanding of the issue and methods to identify, monitor, remove, or mitigate sea dumped munitions.
