Advanced Wind Tunnel Boundary Simulation

STO-MP-AVT-284

One of the major goals of the STO is to monitor emerging technologies and to bring together experts to present and discuss the needs and ideas for these new technologies for application in their fields. The AVT-284 Workshop on Advanced Wind Tunnel Boundary Simulation provided an opportunity for technical experts from NATO countries, Australia, Sweden and Finland to assess the state of the art in the use of high fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of test section wall boundaries and model support hardware in wind tunnel facilities, and to compare results from high fidelity methods to established results. The following objectives have been to be addressed: • Evaluate high-fidelity CFD (Euler, Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes, Detached Eddy Simulation, Large Eddy Simulation, Lattice Boltzmann, etc.) simulation of wind tunnel wall boundaries, other installation effects including support hardware and compare with established results, • Develop recommendations for the use of high fidelity simulation of wall boundaries and model support hardware, and • Identify key areas requiring further research and development.
