Corrosion Management

STO-MP-AVT-303

The objectives of the workshop were 1) to share the best practices on how corrosion is managed across the NATO nations, including diagnostic and prognostic tools used to assess corrosion damage; and 2) to discuss the possible approaches that will allow NATO nations to improve the corrosion management. The workshop covered tri-service experience from air, sea, and land, with greater focus on air vehicle structure corrosion. The future is in predictive maintenance based on Big Data, multiple sensors collecting large amounts of data, sensors connected, corrosion risk managed, modeling corrosion at system and detail design level, including local environment differences, openness to deal with greater complexity of the problem of corrosion in vehicles. However, the new ideas are still very far from implementation. Future activities should include accelerated corrosion testing, corrosion NDI, environmental sampling and severity measurement, corrosion modeling, as well as Maintenance 4.0. AVT 303 has met its objectives and addressed questions that were raised in the meeting announcement
