Information Assurance / Cyber Defence Research Framework

STO-TR-IST-096

The objective of the NATO STO Research Task Group on Information Assurance / Cyber Defence Research Framework (IST-096/RTG-046) was to develop a holistic research construct that viewed the NATO S&T lifecycle as a common and unified process model (called Research Framework), and place the technical contributions of IST-096 in the context of that Framework. IST-096 contributions included: 1) Working closely with ACT and NCIA toward the development of the NCIA-published IA/CD taxonomy; 2) Expanding on initial roadmaps developed by the ET on IA Research Plan (IST-ET-057); 3) Creating a high-level functional specification for a generic CIS Security Prototyping Environment (based on Canada’s ARMOUR Integration Framework); and 4) Designing a multi-thread, multi-threat notional cyber-attack scenario. The Framework has the potential to stimulate innovative thought and potentially serve as a tool to assist STO Panels and Groups in managing their respective research portfolios, including identifying new topic areas. As the NATO S&T community becomes increasingly aware of other Nations’ research activities, and see the potential value those activities can offer, long-term integration and interoperability can be enhanced, and new models of collaboration can be fostered.
