Assessment of Volcanic Ash Effects on Military Platforms

STO-TR-AVT-213

The AVT-213/RTG Task Group 071 evaluated the characterization of, and mitigation strategies for the effects of airborne ash and other particulates and gases on aviation hardware from volcanic eruptions. The Task Group report was written by experts from Industry, Government and Academia and focused on the modern gas turbine engine problems of Volcanic Ash (VA) cloud ingestion and how mitigation strategies may be employed to prevent damage and disruptions to military air operations. The report has four major framework elements to mitigating VA cloud impact – Sense, Protect, Coordinate and Standardise; and they are presented and discussed in detail. Recommendations are presented for command consideration and transition. This report presents knowledge, data and test results from which NATO military field units can use to make informed, safe flight decisions when a volcanic event occurs. Maintenance personnel and facilities will have better expectations/knowledge for hardware returning from VA cloud encounters, resulting in improved risk assessment, quicker return-to-service and lower costs.
